APOLOGIES,
FOR NOT HAVING
A PICTURE
Warning this post is LONG
If you guys are actually interested in the fandom, or even been in it or want to join it, or tried to join it, or have just dipped into the fandom, then you will probably know that the fandom has its own language. It is sometimes called the fandom code, or the fangirl slang, or fanboy slang or anything else fandom and talking related. When I first got involved with the fandom, I was so confused as to what the lingo, or the language was. I quickly figured out what ship meant, however, I was really really confused as to what the term OTP meant. So in this blog post, I will be posting all of the important fangirl or fanboy lingo. So, call me Professor Misty, cause your about to get schooled fangirl style.
First Word: SHIP
Ship is a verb. Not a noun. In the English language, ship is a noun, meaning a thing you sail on, like a boat. Ship is also a term that is used to 'post' or 'send' something, like shipping mail. In the fandom language, shipping is a verb. Shipping is the word you use when you want two characters to be together. For instance, I ship Percy and Annabeth from Percy Jackson, or I ship Alec and Magnus from the Mortal Instruments. Ships can be true, or not true, but it honestly does't matter, because it is your honest opinion. Ships also have cool names, like Percy and Annabeth being Percabeth, which comes from combining their first names. Some characters can't really make a cool, pronounceable name from their first names, so they use their last names. For instance, Solangelo. Solangelo is the ship name for Will Solace and Nico Di Angelo from Percy Jackson.
Now, you are probably thinking, why do they make these weird names? The answer to this is your next fandom word.
OTP
Yes, it is called OTP, with all caps, but in the fandom, no one is really worried about grammar or capitalization errors unless you find one in the book. You see, we are very friendly people once you get used to us.
OTP, is this really a simple one, but you really kind of don't know it until someone tells you. I figured this out by reading Percy Jackson's Greek Gods which is a book I thoroughly enjoyed as it has so many fandom remarks. In the book, it mentions One True Pairings, and then writes the abbreviation for it as OTP. So now you know what OTP means. It means One True Pairing. It is the ship that you love the most out of all of your ships. For instance, I can ship Percabeth, Jiper, Solangelo, Celeo, and Frazel, but my OTP would be Percabeth. It's basically where you lay your life down for that ship. You don't want anything except for them to be together and live happily ever after. Other people like to describe it as your relationship with a relationship.
Third Word: The feels
Okay, I lied. It's actually two words. The feels is a pretty straightforward word. It's when a whole load of balled up emotions suddenly hit you. The feels are most likely going to be sad feels. So you are just reading The Fault in Our Stars, and then suddenly the feels hits you and you start crying. *WARNING* THE FEELS CAN HIT YOU AT ANY TIME OR PLACE
I'm being 100% honest. I promise. Once, I was reading City of Glass, and started crying. AT SCHOOL. Right in the middle of study hall. I started bawling and weeping and whining and wailing really bad, so my friend (not a fangirl) defended me while all the haters started staring at me. Embarrassing. Then, when I got to the part where (I shouldn't say, it would spoil you), I started laughing, and cheering and hugging everyone. Except the haters. DON'T HUG THE HATERS EVEN IF YOU GET THE FEELS. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU GET THE FEELS. THE HATERS DON'T UNDERSTAND. Okay?
The next thing you need to know is probably canon. The word canon is a word that is rarely used, but is used in certain debates. When the whole Solangelo thing first broke out, there were a lot of debates about canon, not canon. Well canon is a word that is rarely used so it is really hard to explain. It's basically, like a figment of your imagination. Some people think that ships should only be made if there was some sort of hint of the ship possibly sailing, or even an acknowledgement of the ship itself. Canon is something you really don't have to worry about, but to put it my way, it is basically saying unicorns exist just because I want it to. That's what canon is. But canon is rarely used, so most likely you won't need to worry about it. these are the more seen words that I have encountered in the fandom, but if you want to know more, you can google 'How to speak fangirl' or watch abookutopia's video of the fangirl language challenge here.
So this was Professor Misty. Do your fangirl homework and stay Nerdy. It's your Nerdy Fangirl, signing out for this post. BB!
